We barely know anything about the
universe.
But as far as we know, it turns out that
roughly 68% of the universe is occupied by the Dark
Energy and 27% by the Dark Matter.
Everything
else that we see( Moon, Stars, Planets) are Normal matter that
is just about 5% and within this there are about 20 trillion
galaxies. And scientists are eagerly searching for other habitable planets and
lifeforms that might be lurking around somewhere.
And they are constantly searching for it
in our own galaxy.
There are anywhere between 250-400
billion stars in the Milky Way and an estimated 100 billion planets. Around 1
in 5 stars are like our sun, and astronomers have estimated that about 22% of
them have planets the size of Earth in their habitable zone, where water can exist
as a liquid and this means that there could be 8.8 billion planets within the
galaxy capable of supporting life (not accounting for composition of the planet
or its atmosphere).
Though we have found some seemingly
habitable planets in the name of Kepler 162f and 452b, they are at least a 1000
light years away and the fastest flying ship we have got so far is just around
16 km/s. So how the heck are we going to get there? The famous quote by Arthur
C. Clarke says- “ Either we are alone in the universe or we are not,
both are equally terrifying”. We will really need some serious
developments in space crafts or the other beings out there can find us if there
are any and they are more capable than us. But the point is the fact that there
might be other beings or there might not be any, might just be the most
disturbing thing in the universe.
